Festa delle Marie
After the opening parade, Feste delle Marie will reach San Marco stage at 16:00, where the twelve “Marias” will be introduced to the waiting crowd and the next “colombina” for the Flight of the Angel will be chosen.
From the 9th century on, Venice celebrated the tradition in which the Venetian Doge offered every year (the day of Mary´s Purification) to twelve beautiful but humble Venetian girls, magnificent jewels as a bridal dowry. In 973, during one of these celebrations, Venice suffered a pirate assault, and the brides were kidnapped with their jewels. However, the people managed to save the girls and the Doge commanded to kill the pirates.
Since then, Marie`s party was established.
